MPFL repair with Internal Brace for Patellar Dislocation

Recurrent patellar dislocation is a common issue. Traditionally, MPFL (Medial Patellofemoral Ligament) reconstruction has been performed using the hamstring tendon. In this procedure, the hamstring tendon is harvested and used to replace the damaged MPFL. This approach can lead to donor site morbidity and introduces a non-living tissue to the MPFL, requiring a period of protection, healing, and revascularization. Consequently, patients may experience irritation, wound complications, and muscle wasting.

The invention of the internal brace has transformed MPFL repair. Surgeons now repair the damaged MPFL ligament directly to the patella, securing the repair with a double-bundle FiberTape internal brace. This method significantly reduces soft tissue bulking and irritation, allows for immediate knee mobilization post-surgery, and results in less knee stiffness, no donor site morbidity, and overall better outcomes.
